SMA Connectors FAQ

Common questions about SMA connector selection, configuration and customization.

What is the difference between standard SMA and RP-SMA?
Standard SMA and RP-SMA use different center contact arrangements. A standard SMA male has a center pin, while an RP-SMA male has a center receptacle. They are not normally interchangeable and are used in different applications.
What frequency range can SMA connectors support?
The supported frequency range depends on the connector design, materials and cable type. Many SMA connectors are used for microwave applications, but the exact limit should be confirmed for the selected configuration.
Can SMA connectors be used with 3.5 mm or 2.92 mm interfaces?
Some SMA, 3.5 mm and 2.92 mm interfaces may be mechanically compatible, but their electrical performance and contact geometry differ. For high-frequency applications, the correct interface or a suitable adapter should be selected.
What materials and plating options are available for SMA connectors?
Common body materials include brass and stainless steel. Finish options may include gold plating, nickel plating, passivated stainless steel and other surface treatments depending on the mechanical, environmental and RF requirements.
Can LWMC RF supply custom SMA cable assemblies?
Yes. LWMC RF supports custom SMA cable assemblies with different cable types, lengths and RF performance requirements. Share your project details for evaluation.
